Last night, I was invited to one of my friend's boyfriend's gigs in Buckhead at a little bar called the Black Bear Tavern. This outing stood out for me in two ways. First off, it marked the first time I had really done something social with friends in a LONG TIME. Obviously, that needs to change, as I had a good time. Much more interestingly, the second unique aspect to the evening was that I was invited to play a little keyboard, jamming along with the band!
The band was essentially a thrown-together collection of friends of this old-style country singer from Austin named Aubrey Slackey who had just flown in recently, presumably for this gig. Aubrey himself played guitar and sang, but were three other guys: one playing guitar, one playing double bass, and one playing violin. As it turns out, they happened to have an keyboard there for auxiliary use, and when they found out I could play, they suggested I come up and play five or so songs with them. The songs were mostly covers of old-country hits (including some Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson), so the chord progressions weren't too hard to figure out.
Overall, the night was really fun. It definitely felt good to do a little performing/jamming again. And, perhaps I've now met some new musicians to hang out with...who knows?
