Voting

Well, after stressing out last week over ridiculously long early voting lines, turns out the wait for voting today was only about an hour, which wasn't even long enough to listen to the entire album I was playing on my iPod. Surprisingly, I only ran into one person I knew at the polls (despite representing the area where I've lived the longest): she was the mother of a middle school friend, and she had volunteered to work the voting locations.

Anyway, I although I was very proud to be voting for Barack, the other candidates I voted for I knew very little about. Yes, I did a little research, especially about my senatorial options, but I would be lying if I said I were totally confidant with my choices. That said, I only voted for positions that had political parties listed (i.e. I didn't for for judges), so I only ended up voting for about ten offices. Also, to my surprise (being my first time really voting, not counting the primary earlier this year), there were a bunch of offices to vote for where there was only one person on the ballot. Not really sure what that's all about, but whatever.

Finally, there were some local issues to vote on...things having to do with parks and amending the local constitution, and although I did vote for them, I wasn't really aware of what the implications of allowing government money to be spent on these things would have. I mean, who doesn't want a new park? But at the same time, can we afford it?

So, although actually voting was certainly a big step up for me, next time I'm going to spend more time looking into the other things I'm voting for, as I don't really agree with my mostly-ignorant approach this time around.
