Crying in Field of Dreams

Last night, Evan and his girlfriend were relaxing watching one of his favorite films, Field of Dreams when they asked me if I wanted to join them. After sitting down to watch part of it, I was hooked (as I hadn't seen it in a long time, and it truly is a great movie), despite needing some time to do some other stuff that evening. It was at this point that Evan made the disclaimer that if I stick around I might have to put up with him shedding some "man-tears" in a scene towards the end that gets him every time. My thoughts to his remark were somewhere in the neighborhood of "yeah, whatever...I don't remember this movie being all that moving..."

But sure enough, I cried heartily not once, but twice during the film: first when Doc Graham sacrifices his dream to play with the pros to save the little girl, and second when Kevin Costner's character finally gets to make amends with his dad. I'm not sure why I wasn't moved by these two scenes the last time I watched the movie (which I believe was in my undergrad years), but I suspect it has something to do with maturing that much more to where the weight of the two scenes (especially the latter with its father-son dynamic) really hit me. The funny thing was that here Evan and I were crying like babies and Evan's girlfriend was perfectly fine. Our theory is that this has something to do with the father-son relationship...something peculiar to this pairing that doesn't come up with the father-daughter relationship and thus doesn't affect women quite as strongly.

Whatever the reason, I had a good cry, and you know what, it really felt good, as I can't remember the last time I cried in such a strong way in a movie (I did tear up in Wall-E, but not like this).

Note to self: I really would have posted this post at 5:31 AM the next morning, but I was trying to get this post in by the end of the month so as to stay on schedule. I know, I know...
