Last night, a friend and I went to see this band called Metalsome that plays regularly in Atlanta. The trick is that this isn't a band that writes their own songs or even one that does typical covers...rather, they're a live karaoke band (sans singer, of course) that plays mostly 80's rock songs for audience members to sign-up to get on stage to sing along to. The concept is really cool, actually, and I've never really heard of anything quite like it before.
Unfortunately, I think we picked the wrong night to go or got there too late, as it was super-packed when we arrived, was full of frat-tastic drunken asses, and the song-list had already been depleted of all the good songs (they don't play any given song twice in one night...that said, they do have a fairly long list). Still, the band WAS good (even though the singers we saw weren't), and they ended up rocking out one song by themselves to close the evening (they chose "Hot for Teacher") which did blow me away.
So, despite the somewhat lukewarm experience I had, I was assured that this was not the status-quo for the show and that I should try going some other time, preferably getting there early enough to be able to get on the list (which I wasn't able to do this time). When I do, I think I'm going to either sing "The Sweetness" by Jimmy Eat World or "Surrender" by Cheap Trick. Looking forward to it!
