So tonight, I finally made it back out to Atlanta's one-and-only live karaoke band, Metalsome, and let me tell you my friends, I definitely got on stage and sang. I had been thinking about what I was gonna do ever since I went the first time six weeks ago, and the song I decided upon was Cheap Trick's "Surrender". Sure, I was a little nervous, but I think it went alright. I mean, people I didn't know came up to me afterwards and told me that I did well, so that has to mean something, right?
That said, I ultimately didn't feel so hot about the performance. I know I can sing the song better than I did (I sing it every week in lessons with my students), so this upsets me a little bit. To my credit, they turned up my mic halfway through the song, as they had had it low for everyone up to that point, evidently because everyone sucked in the first portion of the show. So, from halfway through my song to the time I left, the volume was much louder for the singers. Sucks, but whatever. Also, I'm pretty sure they played the song in a different key than it's in, but I'm not 100% on that.
Fortunately, they give you the opportunity to order a copy of your performance on DVD for $10, which I did. This way, I'll be able to see how bad it really was and apply some self-criticism to help mold me into a better singer. Also, I'll be able to go back and see what key the song was actually played in.
Overall, it was fun, and I'm glad I did it. I'll think about possibly posting the video on this blog when it finally arrives. That is, assuming I'm not totally embarrassed by it... =) Regardless, I'm definitely looking forward to going back and doing it again!
