As you may recall, in previous entries I have written about having seen my friend Megan's boyfriend's band Vortex Park live at a couple different venues in town. Well, the last time I went to see them I had asked Rurik (her boyfriend) if he would like to get together and jam sometime...he was interested but also wanted to spend some time talking about music theory to help improve his knowledge of improvising on violin. So, today we finally made this happen, and it was pretty fun.
Over the course of three hours or so, we jammed a good bit (with me playing acoustic and electric guitar and some keyboards, along with singing) and spent the rest of the time going over the theory behind major and natural minor keys, the overtone series, and intervals. We didn't get around to talking about chords and progressions, but we're going to save that for next time.
The jamming itself was really fun and only reaffirmed for me how much I like playing with other talented musicians. Although I wasn't really looking for a violinist in my band (plus, Rurik's in a couple full-time bands as it is), I would certainly like to work with him on future projects, whatever form those may take. Rurik is a fantastic fiddle/violin player who is fully capable of improvising, even with double stops (and in tune!), and he has a great ear. Had he been at IU when I was writing art music, I most certainly would have asked him to play for my performances every time I could.
