Bret Hart DVD Collection

As you may remember, one of the presents I got for Christmas was the wrestler Bret Hart's most recent auto-biography, given to me by my buddy Dave. Now, although I'm currently battling my way through the incredible Watchmen graphic novel (I read slowly) and have therefore had to put off reading the biography, this didn't stop me from trying to bone up on the Hitman's wrestling career by buying a three-DVD compilation of some of his greatest matches. It only took me about a week to get through the whole thing, which I finished today.

The DVD set featured an hour-long special on Hart's rise to fame, a few special features, and plenty of matches (18 to be exact). Naturally, I really got this for the matches, but as it turns out, they picked some rather odd ones, some of which weren't even commentated or aired on TV. I grew up watching wrestling during the period where Bret Hart transformed from a tag-team wrestler to a singles wrestler, so naturally I enjoyed pretty much all of the matches featuring the Hart Foundation (there were four). Other great matches included bouts against Ricky Steamboat, Mr. Perfect, Stone Cold, and Chris Benoit (in a WCW tribute match to Owen Hart).

Perhaps the best match of the lot was against the Undertaker, one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. Fortunately, this match was right at the height of Undertaker's prime, so he was really fit and agile. In fact, the Undertaker was so popular at this time that the crowd was literally divided evenly between him and Bret Hart, resulting in a constant cacophony of boos and cheers for either. Perhaps the worst matches in the set were the one with Ted Dibiase and the one with Bam Bam Bigelow, not so much because the matches sucked, but because the first wasn't commentated and had awful sound (you could hear Dibiase gasping for air the whole time), and the second was in Barcelona and was commentated in Spanish...

Overall though, the set was pretty great. Granted, after watching many hours of wrestling this past week, I'm a bit tired of it, but if nothing else, this set definitely reinforced how great a wrestler Bret Hart really was. Can't wait to read the book now!
