One of the dance albums I listed in my Top 5 from 2008 was The Field's From Here We Go Sublime, and although it certainly has a problem with long-windedness, I was excited to hear they were coming to town with another up-and-coming dance group, The Juan Maclean. Well, the show (which was at The Earl) was Memorial Day night (this past Monday), and I hate to report that it was one of the most disappointing shows I have seen thus far in 2009.
Sure, The Field is long-winded, but this was exacerbated at the live show by two big factors, both of which had to do with the mix: the overall volume the whole night was WAY too loud, and the mix between different electronic parts in the group's performance of the songs was so unbalanced that the songs hardly resembled their album counterparts at all, despite having all the elements there. By the end of their set I was relieved it was over, but despite this, I still hold the album in high regard.
Now, although The Juan Maclean was much more of a well-balanced live rock/dance hybrid group (with singing, unlike The Field), they tend to be a bit long-winded themselves, the volume was still too loud, and they ultimately don't write that great of music, so I just took off halfway through their set after I had heard their "big" single. So, when you combine this experience with that of the Max Tundra/Junior Boys show a few weeks ago, I'm left with some apprehension about how many shows I should end up letting myself go to...maybe I should be more selective in the future?
