Lolita @ Starlight Drive-In

Supposedly drive-in theatres are pretty rare these days, and Atlanta's only remaining drive-in is the Starlight Drive-In, slightly southeast of the city. Although I had been once before, it had been a long time ago (for Men In Black II of all things!), so when Candace found out they were doing a $1 showing of Stanley Kubrick's 1962 version of Lolita (which she had just finished reading), it was a done deal that we would be there.

Although the film was black and white and not particularly representative of Kubrick's highly-stylized directing featured in films from Dr. Strangelove and beyond, I was intrigued, as the man only made 13 films (this was his 6th), and he's such a well-respected artist that I figure it's worth seeing all of them. In the end, I was a bit let down: not only is the film super toned down compared with the book due to censorship (Kubrick later said that had he known how much censorship was going to come into play he wouldn't have done the film), but it's also a bit too long, isn't particularly artsy in that Kubrick kind of way, and wasn't particularly stimulating.

Still, for what it's worth, I enjoyed the experience of both the film and the drive-in, we had a good time, and I've added another Kubrick film to my list (I have six now, or five if you don't count Spartacus, which I saw in high school and barely remember).
