Video: 'The Informant!' Trailer
Feeling like I've missed out (or nearly missed out) on a lot of movies recently, the other night I got Evan to come out to a movie with me, essentially letting him pick between Inglourious Basterds and the new Matt Damon film, The Informant! He chose the latter, being a comedy fan, and so although I hadn't heard much about the film, we went to check it out.
Unfortunately, we were both disappointed. Not only is the film a whole lot less of a comedy than the trailer would have you believe, it's also tense in that awkward situation kind of way, and it's super-dry throughout, even to the point of ending abruptly. That said, the premise IS interesting: it's the mostly-true story of a rich executive at a big company who becomes an informant for the FBI to help them bring down a price-fixing scandal going on at companies worldwide. The plot thickens slowly as we learn more facts about the true nature of these shady dealings, and although this is all done in an interesting way, it seems like the film would've received a warmer reception had the trailers better represented the true mood and pacing of the film. It's more of a quirky art film than a dark comedy, but whatever.
In the end, Matt Damon was good, all of his internal asides were memorable, and the true story is worth telling, so even though I was a bit disappointed after the film, it's grown on me since.
