SafetySuit

As we tend to do in the search of an evening's activities, Candace and I will resort to looking for some random concert, show, exhibition, or festival to attend on an evening where we have nothing else planned. As such, the other night we ended up going to see a band from Nashville called SafetySuit play for free at a 99x (a local internet radio station) promotional gig at The Tabernacle's underground venue, the Pontiac Garage. We weren't really sure what we were in for, but that's part of the fun of doing something spontaneous, right?

The band that opened for them was Eleven Standing Still, a really mediocre Southern hard rock band (à la 3 Doors Down or possibly Nickelback). Granted, their mix was really good (actually better than the headliner), but this style of music really sucks hard. I like to think of this style as what hicks would listen to if they somehow hated country...

Then SafetySuit came on, and although I liked their vibe (which was a bit strange) and their singer had a nice voice (although his mic was too low in the mix), they were also a fairly mediocre version of a few other bands' styles, this time that of OneRepublic and Matchbox 20. My favorite thing about this group though was the way the crazy/nutty lead guitarist carried himelf: picture Steve Carell's character on The Office thinking he was a rock star. It was weird.

So, although neither of the bands was all that great, it was still fun getting to go do something random. Free concerts should happen more often!
