This past weekend I caught two live rock shows of local bands I hadn't seen before. The first, Attention System playing at Lenny's, I found out about via their bassist Chris who was handing out flyers after The Faint's show at the Variety Playhouse the week before. Based on the fact that they were assuming fans of The Faint might like them and that the flyer said they were in the electro dance rock genre, I figured it would probably be a night featuring bands who fit this style. How wrong I was...out of four bands that played, I missed the first, the second was essentially 90's era alternative goth, and the third was a frat boy soft rock band that belonged up in Athens and played for way too long. Now, although Attention System ended up being in the style they said they were in, I had to leave early in their set due to the night running late. Still, I enjoyed what I did catch and hope to stay in touch with the band (Chris went out of his way at the show to introduce me to people...).
...people like the lead singer of the next band I saw, Siberia My Sweet, who were playing a daytime gig at the Inman Park Festival, a sort of art festival with some live stuff going on as well. This time around though, I was just at the gig to see her band, but it turned out to be a bit more rewarding as I got to network with three members of her band after the show. Their style is more of a 90's era alt rock vibe with a touch of something like Evanescence (due mostly to the singer's delivery), but she said they're thinking of pushing it in a more dance-oriented direction to match the current trends a bit more, and if the last two songs they played are any indication of this, I would say they're headed in the right direction.
Anyway, I always love going to local shows, and I had a good time getting to know members of both bands. Who knows, perhaps all these connections will end up helping me get a band going, or if nothing else, supply me with some new friends in town!
