Last night I went and caught a unique local band, called the Sick Figures, live at the request of one of its recently-recruited members who also happens to be looking to work with me on my band I'm trying to get started. The band's style is a sort of like a mix-up of Tom Waits, cabaret, and goth, with lyrical subject matter often centering around death, graveyards, whiskey/drugs, and other dark stuff. In addition, their fashion sense is a sort of mix-up of those elements, and the lead singer has a deep voice reminiscent of Marilyn Manson and Tom Waits (at times).
I have to admit that while their stuff was unique for the scene here (especially anything featuring cabaret piano), their music started to all sound the same by the end of the show. Oftentimes the instrumental music consists simply of a single-note riff played by all melodic instruments in octaves, leaving the harmonic diversity (again, especially when the keyboard wasn't involved) a bit too sparse for my taste. Also, it was generally difficult understanding the fairly bassy singer's lyrics, which is probably due more to a live-sound issue (with him being so bassy) than anything else.
This said, the group certainly sounds better on their MySpace page, and the guy who's looking to work with me was a solid drummer, so no real complaints here. Looking forward to working with him and glad I got to see the group live!
