Today I joined Candace and her mom at the Atlanta Symphony for a show featuring Tchaikovsky's Voyevode, Beethoven's 2nd piano concerto, and Rachmaninov's 2nd symphony. As could be predicted, I found the concert to be generally boring, but I didn't fall asleep (or even get close), so I guess it wasn't all that bad. =)
The Tchaik left no lasting impression, and with the exception of a pretty stellar piano performance by Ingrid Fliter, neither did the Beethoven. Fortunately, I DID like the Rachmaninov alright, particularly his percussion and brass writing, as well as the 2nd movement in general.
In the end, I enjoyed hanging out with Candace and her mom, but the concert was just your typical symphonic outing featuring music I respect but have little taste for. Fortunately, the ASO's got Gorecki's 3rd symphony coming up soon, and Adams' Dr. Atomic is on schedule for the next season, both of which I'm looking forward to.
