Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark

This film is ridiculously overrated. Candace and I rented it the other night, and we were pretty unimpressed, even to the point of boredom. I guess I figured I had seen this movie before, surely having seen the two sequels, but now that I've seen it I don't really recognize any of it (save for the scene with the big ball). Overall, I just felt like the story was too loosely tied together, the plot seemed like it had HUGE holes in it (even for a movie of this sort), the pacing was off, and the acting seemed a bit flat, especially for Harrison Ford.

And although I will certainly rent the two sequels (partially to prepare for the new one and partially just to know if my previous respect for this franchise is totally unfounded), my memory of them seems to indicate that they didn't have anything quite as unbelievable and supernatural in them as the Ark of the Covenant releasing a bunch of Ghostbusters-style ghosts who kill everyone who looks at them. I mean, the Temple of Doom had that guy who pulled someone's heart out of his chest, and the Last Crusade had that cup thing at the end, but still...

you're obviously crazy here, but i don't know what else to say.

first, as for the supernatural thing, it's in every movie. in temple of doom, indy searches for a magic rock whose absence has caused a drought in india. the thuggee cult practices mind control by forcing people to drink blood, doing this to indy. at one point, the also torture indy by using a voodoo doll. in last crusade, an immortal knight guards the holy grail, which can (and does) magically heal any wounds. but when it is carried past a certain point, the temple collapses.

as for raiders...i'm not sure what your issues were. it's a pulpy, old-time adventure movie, and so the story and characters reflect that. the story seems really straightforward to me - the nazis want the ark for its power, and indy has to stop them.

i'll agree that this movie feels the oldest of the trilogy, and that the effects of the ghosts look dated, but i still can't see this movie as anything but a fun, action-filled adventure.
