On Still Living with My Parents

Living with my parents at age 26 (going on 27 this Summer) wasn't what I had in mind for myself. I suppose what I did have in mind (as recently as my time in Bloomington) was that following my master's I would get my doctorate and then start teaching somewhere. And even though my plans eventually involved moving to Europe, I was originally planning on just being there a year before returning to the States to get my doctorate. Then by the time I had lived in the NL a bit, I had hoped to live in Europe indefinitely, wanting to start some sort of music career there. Hell, even my initial fallback plans for coming home didn't involve me staying at home: I was going to either move to Bloomington (to start my doctorate somewhere else the following year), or I was going to try to get a freelance career going in LA.

But yet, here I am, living with my parents for the foreseeable future. When I first decided not to move to Bloomington (or elsewhere), I was talking with an old high school friend about moving in with her. That never materialized. Then I was almost set to move in with my friend Henry, but due to bad timing and a sense that it wasn't the right move for me, that never happened either (I still need to give him back the key to his place he gave me). The only other viable (and desirable) option that's popped up since these two failed attempts at independence is living with my good friend Evan Cobb, but he's been offered a job in Seattle that he might take, and unfortunately he won't know if he'll take it until around the end of the Summer, meaning that at best I'll probably have lived with my parents for at least a year, if not much longer.

I know I could just move out into a single studio apartment, but I just don't feel I have the money for it, nor would it be a good investment for what it's worth. Fortunately, my parents don't seem to need me to live somewhere else (for the moment), but this can't last forever, so I'm certainly going to move in with Evan if that turns out being an option. Keeping fingers crossed...
