When I first decided to teach privately, my two main forms of finding work were word-of-mouth and personal advertising with flyers. On the flyers side of things, seeing as I wanted to have most of my clients live near me, it made sense to drive through nearby subdivisions putting ads in their mailboxes. To facilitate this, I decided I would have to drive on the left side of the road, which obviously poses certain problems. The remedy involved putting out flyers very late at night (around midnight), as there would be few people out on the road (in addition to fewer people seeing me at all, making the whole process that much less awkward).
So, after an initial flurry of delivering flyers in many, many neighborhoods, I eventually got tired of it and subsequently quit due to seemingly lacking returns balanced with the already decent amount of work I had obtained. Well, lately I've been having a small downswing in employment opportunities, so I figured I would give the flyers another shot; and although it seemed to me months ago that I wasn't getting enough of a response from the flyers to make it worth my time, it turns out upon inspection that about a third of the money I've made thus far has been made off of the clients I got from these flyers.
For the past two nights I've driven around putting out flyers, and I plan to do so again tomorrow night and every other free night I have at home, doing so until I get enough responses or go crazy trying, whichever comes first.
