Although I just finished DJ Mix 4 just under two weeks ago, because it took me so long to complete it, it's now already been over a month since I did its initial recording, so I figured it was high time to go ahead and do one for DJ Mix 5! I just finished it a few minutes ago, and I have to say I really don't know what to think of it. To begin with, it's 18 tracks long (the longest I've done yet), and to make sure it comes out closer to an hour in length than my previous two mixes, I overshot the total length by 25 minutes, expecting to cut out around that much. In addition to these relatively insignificant details, there are plenty of other things about the set list that make this mix way different than the previous four, for better or for worse I'm not yet sure...
First off, the beginning track is the fastest track I've used as an opener, as I tend to like to start things off fairly chill. To make up for it, the next three tracks are pretty mellow, and all feature a female vocalist. After this, we have a sort of mish-mash of more or less typical electro tracks, followed by my first ever re-use of a track from a previous mix (in the form of a different version). The next five tracks represent an assortment of fairly upbeat housey tracks, but then I feel I might have lost direction by switching gears to a couple random dirty (i.e. sexual)/somewhat urban tracks before concluding with an unrelated upbeat drum & bass track. In context with an otherwise positive, clean, and housey set list, these two dirty tracks feel really out of place, so I'm thinking about trying to find appropriate substitutes for them. In my previous mixes (especially from the second onwards), I've tried to include different tracks from each of the following subgenres of house: chill, urban, indie, French, progressive, and electro; but this mix seems to lack a number of these elements. Also, this is the first mix where I've included three pairs of tracks by the same artist, a potential no-no when the mix is only an hour long.
In light of all these potential issues, I'm going to start my preliminary work on the mix, meanwhile trying to see (before I get too far into it) if what it needs is just a little tweaking or possibly a complete do-over. Hopefully I'll stick with it though, as I think it's got potential. I'll keep you posted...
