Continuing from yesterday's post on my past roommates, here are the other five:
6. Scott (Bloomington apartment, first year)
For my first time living somewhere new in three and a half years, I had to turn to my Bloomington apartment complex to put me with yet another potluck roommate. Fortunately, Scott was pretty cool, being a grad student himself (in chemistry). Most commonly known to my friends as Scotty-2-Hotty, Scott wasn't without his quirks though, the biggest of which was his connection to a kinda extreme church which one time caught Dave and Carla on video in public and labeled them as "victim and abuser." Funny stuff.
7-8. Dave and Andrew (Bloomington house, second year)
The classic 805. For the first and only time in my roommate history, I chose to live with two other roommates, this time both friends in my department. Although our house was kinda a "shit hole" (as my dad so bluntly put it), I couldn't imagine having a more memorable or fun year in one place. Granted, living in The Netherlands itself was probably more memorable than anything Bloomington could offer, but that wasn't due to the apartment there. 805 was the perfect house for a bunch of guys acting as close to stereotypical guy behavior as I think we were capable of: sitting around a dirty house watching up to two TVs while playing video games on the third TV, throwing footballs at the bathroom door while I'm on the toilet, having big parties that featured 805-themed drinks, and Dave and Andrew playing a makeshift ball game whose terminology centers around my past romantic encounters. And let's not forget the fat porn...
9. Uri (Den Haag apartment, The Netherlands)
Although I really wanted to live alone when I was in The Netherlands, I only had a few days to find a suitable living situation during my weeklong interview at the school there, so I ended up with a roommate anyway. Uri was perhaps the strangest roommate I've ever had, being a somewhat loner Israeli baroque recorder player at the local conservatory who had a thing for cats and long walks on the dunes. Uri and I had a sort of rocky relationship, especially before we figured out the way each of us likes to live, but by the end it was sad to see him move back to Israel. Oddly enough, the first and only time I've ever lived alone was in Andrew and Sasha's place, the house I took care of for my last three months in The Netherlands (while they were in South Korea) after I got politely kicked out of the apartment I shared with Uri so the landlord could complete some renovations.
10. Evan (Atlanta apartment, second year back home)
And this brings us to Evan...well, almost. Naturally I COULD count my parents as roommates here at their home in Atlanta for the better part of this past year, but that doesn't really count, does it? Evan will mark my third time living with an already-established friend, and coincidently, all of these people were musicians. While Evan might not be a career musician, he is a solid cellist and continues to play in a regularly-gigging quartet to this day. On top of this, I feel Evan and I have pretty complimentary personalities, so I think this next six months (or longer if he doesn't move) will prove to be really fun.
