DJ Mix 5's Status

For the past few days all I've been thinking about is my current DJ mix CD, as I've been spending almost all of my available free time working on it. Right now, I'm about three-quarters of the way through my setlist, which itself has grown since I last wrote about it. Having not been very happy with a few of the tracks from my initial recording, today I set about DJ'ing through the second half of the mix trying to replace the old tracks with new ones that both better fit the overall mood and have more closely-related keys. One thing I've begun to realize when doing these mixes is that the process of blending any two given tracks is essentially like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and by picking two tracks that already have related key signatures without needing to transpose them, I've eliminated one of my bigger obstacles in putting them together (with an added bonus of keeping the tracks in their original key, which is always the goal though not always possible).

So, I got rid of four original tracks and added six new ones, leaving me with a total round number of twenty tracks in this mix, which according to this set's average track length should give me a little over an hour of music. This mix-and-match attitude towards my setlist does unfortunately make this mix a whole lot less organic in origin, but although I wasn't sold on the mix initially, I think it's going to turn out quite nicely this time around.

Finally, while my last mix CD took 25 days to complete, I'm predicting this one will be done by week's end, having taken around two weeks from start to finish. Hopefully this is a sign that I am in fact getting better at producing a quality product with higher efficiency.
