Hellboy II: The Golden Army

The other movie I saw recently was Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and although I had recently realized how overrated the first film was, I had gone into this one hoping for the best. I even felt this sentiment was backed up by the fact that Guillermo del Toro had done Pan's Labrynth in the interim, in which he employed incredibly stunning visuals, the kind which seemed perfectly suited to the new Hellboy film. And the trailers didn't really help either, as they were as impressive as one could hope for.

Unfortunately, this movie ended up being no more than some really impressive creatures and visual effects...the story itself was just as hollow and un-relatable as in the original film, leaving me disappointed and feeling like the money used in making the film could have been spent on better material, even if directed by del Toro himself.

I don't need to keep belaboring this point though, as this review summed it all up much more accurately than I could with the space I have here. The one thing I would add is that the love stories in this film were a bit over the top, and despite my understanding for the existence of the relatable human elements in the Hellboy franchise, it just didn't work and came off as too much.

So, see this film if you're up for some great visuals, but don't expect much from the content itself...
