Faxed Invitation

As I mentioned in the last post, I recently saw this year's CORE modern dance show, an event I've been apart of (or at least seen) for the last five years. This year, my involvement was a bit sparse, but I did get to play a small role. There was this track by Underworld called "Faxed Invitation" that the director really liked and wanted to use for the show, but she wanted to use her own vocal track. So, instead of going through the unnecessarily lengthy process of contacting Underworld's people for a sans vox track, she just had me recreate the track, letting her take care of the spoken-word vocal part. Initially, I was supposed to perform this song live with a couple synths and a sampler, but that fell through due to the fact that it wasn't very practical considering my teaching schedule an hour and a half away.

In general, I was very pleased with how the piece turned out (I hadn't really seen the dance prior to the show). There were two main parts to the piece, the first involving my work, and the second involving the dancers improvising for two cameras set up to feedback various electronic sounds according to their movement. The whole thing worked well together, even though there were a few technical inconsistencies of the sort the tech crew had been making all night. The costuming and choreographed movement were really fitting, and the music seemed to fit the dance throughout (even though the last section turned out to be a bit unusual).

Overall, even though I didn't really get to get involved in a truly creative way, I'm glad to still be keeping active with CORE, and look forward to many more collaborations.
