Last night, my family took Candace and me to see my family's church's yearly Passion Play. Despite how this sounds, I was actually expecting this to be a decent enough time: in the past, the show has been a major, high-quality production focusing on the events surrounding Jesus' crucifixion. Unfortunately though, after 20 years of successful Passion Plays, the church decided to change things up this year...
Instead of a relatively entertaining play about the most important event in this religion's focal figure, what we got was an over-the-top horrendous borefest that essentially consisted of about 15 overblown worship songs sung by a choir of over 100 people (and one hired MC), highlighted with a few volunteer "performing artists" who wowed us with their typically mediocre abilities in the arts. I felt bad enough bringing Candace to all of this when I expected it to be a play, but when the curtains opened only to show the giant choir taking up the whole stage, I knew we were in for trouble.
The funny thing about this whole ordeal was that prior to going I told my Mom I probably wouldn't be attending church this Easter...Little did I know this "play" was basically going to be a church service itself. Oh well. Guess I can always skip Easter next year...
