After a little over seven weeks since I last did the initial recording for my third mix CD, today I finally got around to recording the set list for number four! To prepare myself, especially after such a long stint not DJ'ing or even practicing much at home, I did about four nights' worth of test runs plus an evening dedicated to sorting through my collection and reminding myself what tracks are available to me. Ultimately, I think this preparation paid off, as the mix turned out fairly well. Granted, it's always a bit difficult to tell how well the finished studio mix will come out in a week or two, but I think the track selection, flow, and blending potential are all pretty high quality.
Probably the biggest change to my studio mixing technique that I made in my last mix was using a fairly large amount of track editing, often cutting out over a minute or two of track length. Due to this, I decided I would need to record more than 60 minutes' worth of unedited music to end up with the desired hour for the final product. I actually overshot this a bit, recording a full 80 minutes with 17 tracks...three tracks more than my longest mixes thus far! The biggest difficulty this presents is the necessity to edit the transitions between that many more tracks, each of which takes a fair amount of studio time. Due to this, I'm going to go ahead and predict that I won't be done with this mix until roughly two weeks from now (which would be June 30th). Let's see how close I come!
