A few nights ago for my Dad's birthday dinner, he confessed to me that he had been hoping for the past few gift-receiving opportunities that I would offer to teach him guitar lessons, even though I had NO CLUE that he was even slightly interested. You can imagine how much this warmed my heart, as it was not only a sign that Dad wanted to spend some quality time with me but that he also wanted to have something invested in my musical life he and my Mom had helped give me. When it comes down to it, I'm not sure he could have come up with a compliment much more satisfying than this.
Anyway, last night we sat down to our first lesson. My Dad has never taken any music lessons of any sort, so we had to start from nothing, but being a mature adult, he was pretty easy to teach. He still has some finger issues, particularly concerning getting his fingers out of the way of neighboring strings, but 24 hours later he's already starting to get over his initial obstacles. In fact, it made me very happy to pull up to the house today only to see my father dutifully practicing guitar down through the basement window.
Ultimately, I'm really looking forward to teaching my Dad, regardless of how far he takes this. That said, I certainly would love to be able to play along with my Dad someday, especially after all these years of being the musical odd man out in the family... =)
