My favorite stand-up comedian George Carlin passed away this past Sunday due to heart failure. Although you could tell he was getting a bit old in his more recent routines, it was still a bit of a shock that he had passed away (after all, he was born the same year as Philip Glass, and I sincerely think Glass has at least 10 more years left with us). Carlin was my favorite comedian due to combining a sharp sense of cynicism with his typically profound observations on political and cultural reality. In his later routines, Carlin had actually gotten so far into this that they almost ceased to be about laughs and instead functioned as a sort of pointed lecture on what's wrong with the world.
