Hulk

In preparation for the new Hulk movie coming out, I thought I ought to rent the Ang Lee version from 2003 to compare it to. Going into this thing, I had fairly decent memories from my theatrical viewing of it five years ago, and although I think a fair amount of this was due to having had very low expectations for the film going in, I still was quite surprised how bad I found the film to be upon watching it today.

The movie is just weird. I don't think it's fair to call it shit (that would be reserved for something like Ghost Rider), but it just doesn't make sense...especially the cinematography and flow from one scene to another. Add to this a soundtrack that never seems to match the film, a metaphysically-confusing finale, and an absurdly neon green protagonist, and you've got a really strange film on your hands. One thing the film DIDN'T fail to do properly was to have a decent set of fleshed-out interpersonal relationships, but ultimately that seems to be all that's holding this film together (that and the cast, of particular interest being Nick Nolte's monologue at the end).

Ultimately, I am really glad I saw this before the new Hulk film, even if only because it lowered the bar for a movie for which I already had low expectations. I plan on seeing the new Edward Norton version this weekend when it comes out, so look out for a full review soon.

I've heard some pretty decent things about the new remake. I can't get over the fact that they even had to make a new one, but you're right, Ang Lee's version is certainly one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I'll be interested to see what your thoughts are.
