6th Band-Recruiting Rehearsal

Today I had my first rehearsal with a keyboardist in a long time...and this time it was with a female backup singer as well (which is exactly what we were hoping for!). As I reported a few days ago, my second meeting with our first potential keyboardist (a guy who was looking to do a harder-edged group) turned out to be mutually ill-fitting for both us and him, so I went to work sending out emails on Facebook asking people for any recommendations they might have for local keyboard-playing female backup singers. Well, within hours of sending out my email, I had four or five leads, but the first one seemed the most promising.

The keyboardist's name is Emily, and she has had experience playing for a group or two in Athens and a group or two in Atlanta as both a keyboardist and a lead/backup singer. As it turns out, we sort of peripherally knew one another via a mutual acquaintance from high school/undergrad, and we reconnected after many years at a Christmas party two years ago. Since then, we hadn't kept up, but I shot the email her way since she's kinda an indie kid and seemed like she might know some people I could audition for the band.

Little did I suspect that she herself would be the sort of person I was looking for: she's a good singer, she picked up some of the riffs I showed her on keyboard pretty quickly, she has had some valuable experience, she looks the part, and she listens to the style of music we find to be influential in the band. It might be a week or so before we start integrating her into our band rehearsals, as I have yet to teach her her parts for the songs one-on-one and we're also still solidifying the drummer position, but I'm excited to have her as an addition to the group. That was way easier finding a keyboard player/backup singer than I had expected!
