Although most of my music purchases tend to be of full-length studio albums, sometimes I buy an EP or two, usually when the group in question hasn't yet released a full-length and most-likely won't for some time. In fact, it's becoming quite common for groups to release EPs these days for promotional purposes, most-likely due to the change in universal availability that online stores now can offer these short and historically not-as-well-purchased releases. Now, I'm grouping my EP purchases from quarters one and two due to the fact that in that whole time I only picked up five of them (and in fact, in the whole of Q1, I only bought one).
So, here are the EPs I bought in the first half of 2009:
1. Wallpaper - T-Rex (5/5)
2. Passion Pit - Chunk Of Change (4/5)
3. Say Anything - ...Was A Real Boy (3/5)
4. Swimming with Dolphins - Ambient Blue (4/5)
5. Sunbears! - Dream Happy Dreams (5/5)
So, two fives, two fours, and only one three. Not so bad. That said, for an EP to score a bad score means it must really suck, as EP's have the added advantage of having fewer tracks, thereby (hopefully) allowing the band to include only their six best songs on offer at the time of release. Now, while I love the funky Wallpaper EP, Sunbears! easily takes the cake here with six tracks that are quite possibly the most musically-inspired tracks out of any rock release I can remember purchasing in a long time. Definitely check out this one (and see them live if you can)!
