Food, Inc.
FOOD, INC.: Movie Trailer - Funny blooper videos are here
Candace informed me of this interesting new documentary about the food industry that recently came to theatres called Food, Inc., so we went to check it out. Basically, it's kinda another one of these Super Size Me-style call-to-arms films, this time about the food industry at large. Now, although you would certainly expect a film like this to get by by simply showing you lots of disturbing images of animals being treated poorly, it actually manages to stay clear of this (mostly), instead focusing on the wrongs being done to everyone from the common consumer and the animals all the way to even the farmers working for the industry.
Instead of trying to scare you into eating healthier or trying to lobby against the food industry, the film presents a positive alternative: because the food industry is driven by financial gain, the easiest way to change it is to have more and more people buying organic at the grocery store, essentially voting for change with their wallets. We can already see the results of this working in the recent trend for regular grocery stores and even Wal-Mart to carry numerous organic products, sometimes even designating a whole area of the store to them. So, if it has worked thus far, who's to say it couldn't work even more if people like me (who never used to buy organic) started doing so.
Now, unlike a film like Sicko or Religulous, where the only way you can fix the problem is by either writing to your congressman/woman or the even-more-nebulous trying to encourage the end of religion in society, Food, Inc. gives us all a practical way to go about changing the world we live in. And, it's due to this that I've now started buying all-organic at the grocery store...but I'll save that for another post!
